Newspaper Design
Our newspaper design process is not derived from any formula or particular style. There are no theories of newspaper design. Newspaper design is deeply rooted in practical realities and is more organic than any abstract theoretical process. Newspapers must fit in with their city, their readers, and the communities they serve. Each newspaper must have its own identity and personality. Our comprehensive design services range from analysis to concept development to prototype production to extensive post-launch review. Final model pages are devised in close cooperation with our clients’ in-house project teams. We supervise the creation of a comprehensive design stylebook and help train for the implementation of the design into your daily production.
Editorial Strategy
In the course of a newspaper’s publishing history, there are many changes. Reading habits change, cities grow and other mediums of communications are introduced into society. Newspapers must evolve and adjust their editorial strategy to keep pace with these changes, or face declining readership. We believe it starts with knowing who you are, or who you want to be, then understanding who your readers are and what they want. From there we can help craft a mission statement for your newspaper that can guide all aspects, from content, to design, to marketing.
Supplements
Newspapers sometimes wish to redesign a supplement independently of the larger paper, or in the case of a start-up, create a new look to establish a distinct identity for a section of the paper - perhaps appealing to a niche audience. Based on strategies and sample content provided, we develop concepts and prototypes just as in a full newspaper design, coach our clients up to the launch of the newly designed supplement, and provide follow-up critique or training services as desired by the client.
Classifieds
No project is complete without making efforts to improve this section. Classified text, indexes and labeling devices are among the most important typography in the newspaper. Readability and consistency of typefaces chosen are two crucial factors that impact the success, ease and speed of your readers’ navigation of these pages. Column width, white space, alignment of type, and rule lines are also crucial elements of successful classified design. And finally, the economy and efficiency of letterspacing and leading of lines of text are factors that immediately impact your bottom line, in terms of the number of pages of newsprint needed to print your classifieds daily.
Branding
The competitive nature of today’s marketplace puts an increasing emphasis on “branding” - that is, how professional, identifiable, and direct your company’s graphic design is across the board, from typographic treatments to logos to colors. Based on our close collaboration with your newsroom, Garcia Media will work with your marketing department or an outside agency to suggest the most effective approaches to “sell” a new look to your audiences. Any major change needs to be explained carefully to both readers and advertisers alike, and we have the expertise to help you do that. We have consulted with small and large clients in the areas of print campaigns, radio, TV, billboards, truck and rack promotions, and more.
