Jan. 5th In Nigeria, a new newspaper appears

TAKEAWAY: On Sunday, Jan. 4, Next on Sunday appeared in the streets of Lagos, Nigeria. It is a colorful broadsheet a companion to what will be the daily tabloid Next. The online edition is already available.  For Dele Olojede, publisher, it is a dream come true, and what he terms the beginning of “the biggest challenge of my career”.

Dec. 29th Reviewing 2008, projecting into 2009 through Garcia Media projects

TAKEAWAY: As 2008 comes to a close, and as we review the work we have completed over the past 12 months at Garcia Media, we feel especially proud of those projects where we collaborated in the creation of a new newspaper.  This is the last blog posting of 2008. Dec. 17th In West Africa: a new newspaper is born—-online first!

TAKEAWAY: At midnight Dec. 18, West African time, a new newspaper made its entrance into the media world. It is appropriately called NEXT, and we are honored to have been part of this project, created, nurtured and engineered by publisher Dele Olojede, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist.

Dec. 15th Spanish journalist and blogger, Juan Varela, discusses his craft

Dec. 11th In Italy: Il Secolo XIX chosen Best Regional Daily 2008

TAKEAWAY: A moment of great pride for the team of our client newspaper, Il Secolo XIX,   in Genoa, Italy. The newspaper was chosen this week as the Best Regional Daily 2008 at a ceremony of the Italian Media Awards in Milan. Il Corriere della Sera won the Best National Newspaper prize.

Dec. 10th Sports dailies in France: are 3 too many? How about four?

TAKEAWAY: When you ride Paris’ immaculate subway, the Metro, in early morning, you notice the number of young men who read a copy of the sports daily L’Equipe. Now, two other titles try to get on the Metro as well. But is three sports daily newspapers more than the Parisien sports fanatics really need? What’s the score so far?

Dec. 8th If I could purchase The Miami Herald……

TAKEAWAY: When does it all end? This cycle of bad economic news that seems to numb all of us so that what could have meant horrendous financial news one year ago has now become part of what we hear repeatedly: newspapers laying off employees, newspapers that cease publication, circulation down, revenue disappearing.  Today was particularly hard, as we read that The Miami Herald is looking for a buyer!  In addition, media conglomerate Tribune Co. has filed for bankruptcy protection, pressured by high debts. For me, The Miami Herald is sort of family. How I wish I could buy it, then this is what I’d do……..

Dec. 5th In Austria: Wirtschafts Blatt introduces new front page

TAKEAWAY: What happens when the newspaper has the right look and feel, outstanding typographic components and good graphics, but something is missing on Page One? The Austrian financial daily, Wirtschafts Blatt, published in Vienna, decided to tackle just that, with much success.

Dec. 4th A stitch in time: the newspaper that stays together

TAKEAWAY: It is only a couple of almost invisible stitches on the spine of the newspaper, but what a difference they make to readers who can handle their newspaper so much easier. So, why are most newspapers worldwide NOT stitched?

TAKEAWAY: We all know that Nov. 4, 2008 was a historic date as Sen. Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. A book published by The Poynter Institute for Media Studies captures the moment in a collection of 75 front pages from the nation’s newspapers.
